People sure have their strange ways of making money. We have seen all kinds of unusual methods to drive tourists in different places – let us just thing at the classical example of Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the Unites States, purposely built in the middle of Mojave Desert. However, few other places can compete with the French village of Ares, where some UFO enthusiast have finally managed to celebrate the landing of the first alien ship, on one of the only UFO airports in the world. The existence of a landing facility for alien spaceships is not a novelty: the facility was inaugurated in 1976, but had no luck in attracting alien life forms. So the locals decided to give alien tourism a boost and orchestrated the landing of a fake UFO. It is not sure yet if the initiative will prove to be a fruitful now or not, but the building of a UFO airport sure did. Even of nobody ever saw an extraterrestrial life form in the area, the existence of such a facility in a small village like Ares proved to be a really smart thing. The place is perfectly legal (there are local laws regulating its existence) and also very touristy: it attracts no less than 20 k visitors every year.

We all remember the story of the Japanese guy who fell in love with a charming virtual girl and became the first person in the world to marry a fictional character. Unexpectedly or not, more young men in Japan seem to take his example and travel to all kinds of locations just to take pictures with young and attractive cartoon characters. It all happened, in Atami, a popular seaside in the Shizuoka region. The people of Shizuoka are commonly known to be very enterprising: this region of Japan was just as thriving in medieval times as it is now. However, their latest invention seems to be taken from a sci-fi movie: any man with a smart phone who tries to take a picture at a certain spot (a bronze statue) in Atami can get a picture with him and the beautiful girl. For those trying to look at the bigger picture, all we can say is that this phenomenon is part of another computer game craze, which debuted with the release of the Nintendo simulation game Love Plus. While many other people travel to Atami in order to enjoy the thermal waters and the mild climate, Love Plus fans would travel for hundreds of miles just to get a shoot at Rinko (this is the name of the augmented reality girl).

Nevada, home of the Burning Man
USA is famous for many things, form amazing nature to ultra-modern cities, but one must admit that this is also the location for some of the strangest manifestations in the world. When it comes to weird festivals, States like Nevada, Colorado and California represent perfect choices. But this month, it’s Nevada’s turn to take the lead, with one of the most popular and picturesque festivals in the whole country: Burning Man. The story of the burning man started somewhere is the 80s, on a beach near San Francisco (where else). At that time, an 8 feet tall wooden man was burned as part of a Summer Solstice celebration. Over the years, the height of the burning man continued so increase, so organizers were soon forced to change the festival’s location to the current one, which is the Black Rock Desert, Nevada. If, you, however imagine that the burning man is only about a gang or weirdos who travel for several hundred miles just to burn a wooden statue in the middle of the dessert, then think again. Although much of the festival has to do with giant sculptures and art installations, there are many things going on in this part of Nevada, including concerts, workshops and parades, all contributing to an absolutely unique atmosphere.

No matter if you have a fascination for planes or, par contrary, a phobia, it is still interesting to watch how the industry is struggling to be more efficient, both in terms of costs and the comfort during flight. I mean, for now, most air companies are struggling to keep bankruptcy away, but on the long run, we should expect to travel in better conditions for lower prices. It is true that the low cost carrier fever might be just a trend (I think that most of us have notices how prices for the low cost companies are not so low any more and there is a fee for everything.
Back to my idea, what I was trying to point out at the beginning is that changes and innovations in the air line industry can n affect us all. And a recent example comes to prove my theory: after months is which the whole industry has waited for the release of Boeing’s new plane 787 Dreamliner, the manufacturer has just announced that, due to technical problems, the official launching is delayed till next year. This is not only bad for the company’s profits, but is also deprives us (and, according to Boeing’s claims) the whole planet from having a faster, more environmentally friendly and efficient plane. So we can only hope that the problems are solved and the New Year will bring us and many air companies a whole new flying toy.

I think there is no other city in the whole world which has stimulated people’s imagination to such a degree like Paris does. The city upon the Seine, considered by many as the City of Romance and commonly known as the City Of Lights, is half history and half legend. There is no corner of Paris that has never been immortalized in some way either by some low life painter destined to become a post mortem celebrity, or by the amateur photographs that fill the streets of contemporary Paris in search for the ultimate travel snap. Paris is by no means the kind of city where one could spend a weekend and go home under the impression that there is nothing left to see. I did this mistake once and now I’ve been dreaming for days at my next time in Paris. The way I see it, it goes like this: first, find some short time rental, preferably in a central area. Second, try to feel at home, let Paris fill you with its spirit. Do everything possible in order to live like a Parisian, shop at local markets; cook French dishes; drink your coffee in the morning in some coquette roadside café; attend cultural events; interact with people. And, most important, try to see as much of Paris as you can, not the toursity stuff, but Paris as a whole. This is just wishful thinking, of course, but if you are really interested in Paris and all its attractionsm, you can always start planning your visit from with this short Paris Sights travel guide and create your own Parisian fantasy.

The Ever-Fascinating Japan
Japan is, by any standards, a country of perpetual fascination. In addition to its complicated rituals and long-preserved traditions, Japan also benefits from amazing technology and constant innovation. This is not only the country of samurai swords and origami, but also the country of sophisticated robots, super-fast trains that are never late, skyscrapers and contagious fashion trends. After a century in which Japan’s economy has evolved from the agrarian stage to that of a cutting-edge, highly technologized trend setter, and after learning how to conciliate the western influences with its own cultural inheritance, Japan has become a tourist paradise. Although it is true that Japan, and Tokyo especially, can be quite pricy, there are very few, if not inexistent, those who dare negating that Japan is not worthy of every last penny. Just think about Tokyo alone, one of the world’s biggest metropolises, the common ground of super-busy business men, expats, artists, politicians, lolitas and otakus, all lost in the huge river of people that flows under the mesmerizing billboards. And if you add all the interesting fests and numerous traditions like the tea ceremony, or meditation, or Noh theatre representation, then you surely are expected to be overwhelmed by all the richness of this far eastern country. For more info on Japan, its history or attractions, take a glance at this Japan Travel Guide.
